2009 Review of Sissonville Volunteer Fire Dept.

2009 was the busiest ever for the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department as we responded to 567 calls, with 102 of those coming in the month of December alone. We had 51 Structure Fires (27.5% increase from 2008), 225 Auto Accidents (13.1% Decrease), 28 Vehicle Fires (75% Increase), 10 Rescues (same as 2008), 23 Brush Fires (91.6% Increase), 22 Fire Alarms (83.3% Increase), 35 Assistance Calls (12.5% Decrease), 115 Investigations (21% Increase), 53 Other Fires (6% Increase), 2 Searches for Missing Persons (33% Decrease), and 2 Move Up / Standby Requests (77.7% Decrease).

We have eight new members in 2009, two of whom were previous members. They have all completed their training and are already helping tremendously. The new members are Michael Oakley II, Dustin Taylor, Drew Pack, Christian Shamblin, Josh Matheny and Mark Jarrett. The two returning members are Sturgil Jones and William Strickland.

We ran 44 Mutual Aid Calls in 2009 assisting Tyler Mountain VFD 36 times, Southern Jackson VFD (Jackson County) four times and Route 34 VFD (Putnam County), Poca VFD (Putnam County), Loudendale VFD, and Charleston FD one time each.

In 2009, we also signed Mutual Aid Agreements with all of our neighboring fire departments for Automatic Mutual Aid on Structure Fires and Auto Accidents in some areas. This will allow us to receive the help needed for Structure Fires, especially during the daytime hours and will allow us to do the same for other departments. Agreements are as follows:

Frame VFD (Kanawha County Station 34): They run all Structure Fires with us along Aarons Fork Rd. and Cicerone Rd. with all side roads in between.

Institute VFD (Kanawha County Station 24): They run all Structure Fires with us along Woodward Dr. from the Charleston City Limits to Casdorph Rd. with all side roads in between.

Malden VFD (Kanawha County Station 3): They run all Structure Fires with us along Sissonville Dr. from the Charleston City Limits to the Jackson County Line. This includes most roads in between.

Poca VFD (Putnam County Station 600): They run all Structure Fires with us along the Kanawha County portions of Harmons Creek Rd, Dry Branch Rd. and Bronco Ln. We will run all Structure Fires with them along Poca River Rd. and Harmons Creek Rd. with all side roads in between.

Route 34 VFD (Putnam County Station 400): They will run all Structure Fires with us along Derricks Creek Rd. from Second Creek Rd. to the Putnam County Line, Second Creek Rd. from Harry Dr. to Derricks Creek Rd., Frogs Creek Rd. from Tanner Fork Rd. to Derricks Creek Rd., Allens Fork Rd. from Trace Fork Rd. to the Putnam County Line, Kellys Creek Rd. from Our Way Rd. to the Putnam County Line, McClane Pike (Route 34) in the Kanawha County portions between Heizer Creek Rd. and Derricks Creek Rd. and the portions of Dog Fork Rd. and Cunningham Rd. that are in Kanawha County. We are third due on all responses to their area from Heizer Creek Rd. to the Jackson County Line.

Tyler Mountain VFD (Kanawha County Station 23): This agreement has actually been on file since 2004, but updated in 2009. We run all Auto Accidents and Fires with Station 23 along Rocky Fork Rd. with all side roads in between. They run all Structure Fires with us on Martins Branch Rd, Kellys Creek Rd to Our Way Rd, and Frogs Creek Rd. to Tanner Fork Rd. and Woodward Dr. from Casdorph Rd. to the end with all side roads in between.

Walton VFD (Roane County Station 300): They will run all Structure Fires with us on Cicerone Rd. from the Poca River Rd. intersecion to the Roane County line. We will run all Structure Fires and Auto Accidents with them on Ambler Ridge Rd. from Kettle Rd. to their current boundary with Gandeeville-Harmony VFD, this will include Kettle Rd., Straight Creek Rd, Cicerone Rd and Harmony Rd. with all side roads in between.

Sissonville VFD Responds to Jenkins Drive House Fire

January 17, 2009 at 4:06 A.M. the Sissonville VFD received notification of a House Fire on Jenkins Dr. Engine 261 was first arriving unit to find a Double Wide Trailer with a very large attached garage approximately 50% involved.

There were no hydrants within approximately 1 1/2 Miles of the scene, so all water used had to be brought in with Tankers from the Sissonville VFD, Malden VFD, and Chesapeake VFD.

Crash with Entrapment on Sissonville Drive

Tuesday morning just before Rush Hour Traffic on January 13, 2009, the Sissonville VFD was dispatched for a Two Vehicle Crash on Sissonville Dr. in front of NAPA Auto Parts which is near the intersection of Starlite Dr. One Vehicle was on its side and another was in the roadway on its wheels – One Person was entrapped in that vehicle. We used the Jaws of Life to remove the door and roof of the vehicle to remove the driver. He was taken to the hospital by KCEAA. Sissonville Drive (Route 21) was shutdown for at least an hour.

2008 Year End Review

The Sissonville VFD saw 2008 as a very busy year responding to 559 calls for help not including the 1000 +/- First Responder Medical Calls we were dispatched for. This was 100 calls more than any year since 2004.

We responded to 40 Structure Fires (more than the past two years), 259 Auto Accidents (more than any year since 2002 when we started keeping track on this Website), 16 Vehicle Fires, 10 Rescues, 10 Brush Fires, 12 Fire Alarms, 40 Assistance Calls, 95 Investigations, 50 Other Fires (trash, etc.), 3 Searches for Missing Persons, and 9 Moveup or Standby calls for our Mutual Aid Departments.

In 2008, we received at least four grants:

FIRE Act Grant for $33,491.00 for a new Air Compressor and Ladders.
Polaris Ranger 6×6 from U.S. Smokeless Tobacco
Troy-Bilt Snow Blower from WCHS-TV and WVAH-TV
Good Neighbor Citizenship grant from State Farm Insurance for our annual Sissonville Fire & Rescue School.

Fire Destorys Allens Fork Residence

Just hours after posting a story regarding an update on the Route 21 bridge closure which limits our access to calls on Allens Fork Rd, we were dispatched for a Fully Involved Trailer Fire on Allens Fork Rd.

Engine 262 was first arriving unit reporting a Fully Involved Trailer on the ground. Access was limited due to a low weight limit bridge. The home was completely destroyed. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Route 21 Bridge Closure

The bridge closure on Route 21 near the Jackson County line is still causing delayed response times of nearly 10 Minutes to Allens Fork Rd. residents and for Mutual Aid calls to residents on the lower areas of Jackson County, especially those on Middle Fork Rd.

The past 6 months since the bridge closed the Sissonville VFD has reponded to 9 calls for help (3 Auto Accidents, 2 Structure Fires, 2 Rescues, and 2 Other Fire Calls) not including the dozens calls for EMS and Police.

Derricks Creek Home Destroyed By Fire

On Sunday morning December 28, 2008 at approximately 6:35 A.M. the Sissonville VFD received a call for a Trailer Fire approximately 6 Miles out Derricks Creek Rd. Engine 261 marked en route just two minutes later and was the first arriving unit to report a Fully Involved Trailer on the ground. One Resident was trated at the scene by KCEAA for minor burns. The family is being taken care of by the Red Cross.

Vehicle into Residence on Sissonville Dr.

The Sissonville Fire Department received a call from Metro 911 at 1:17 A.M. on December 20, 2008 reporting a Vehicle had struck a trailer and the occupant was ejected. Fire units arrived scene to find a vehicle straight up and down on top of a trailer at Brookside Mobile Home Park. The Vehicle apparently left Route 21 and struck the residence trapping the driver inside. No one in the residence was hurt. The driver was transported to the hospital by KCEAA MEdic 269.

Vacant House Burns in Sissonville

At 10:05 P.M. on December 15, 2008 the Sissonville VFD was notifed of a Structure Fire beside 7379 Sissonville Dr. which is near Legg Fork Rd. First arriving units reported a Two Story Residential Structure with fire through the roof. The residence was vacant and the windows and doors were boarded up due to it being the site of a former Meth Lab. This same house burnt two or three years ago and was rebuilt. The fire is considered suspicous and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
